Xenogale

Xenogale is a genus of mongoose in the family Herpestidae containing a single living species, the long-nosed mongoose (Xenogale naso), native to wetlands and rainforests of Central Africa from Nigeria's Niger Delta eastward through Cameroon, the Central African Republic, Equatorial Guinea, Gabon and both Congos, from sea level to about 640 meters elevation. It is water-dependent and largely solitary, holds a home range of 41 to 46 hectares, travels considerable daily distances while foraging and uses different resting sites rather than a single den. It is listed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List since 1996 but faces habitat fragmentation from logging, mining and slash-and-burn agriculture, and hunting pressure for bushmeat in Gabon.
