Xylocopa is the genus of carpenter bees, subfamily Xylocopinae, tribe Xylocopini, family Apidae, formally described by Pierre Andre Latreille in 1802 and comprising about 500 species organized across 31 subgenera. The common name carpenter bee derives from their nesting behavior, since nearly all species burrow into hard plant material such as dead wood or bamboo to build their nests.
