Zalophus

Zalophus is a genus of eared seals, family Otariidae, comprising three recognized taxa, two living, the California sea lion and the Galapagos sea lion, and one recently extinct, the Japanese sea lion, which formerly ranged across Japan and Korea. The California sea lion occupies the western coast and islands of North America from southeast Alaska to central Mexico, while the Galapagos species ranges the Galapagos Islands and the Ecuadorian coast north to Colombia's Isla Gorgona. Members show pronounced sexual dimorphism, with California sea lion males reaching 300 to 380 kilograms and a pronounced sagittal crest against 80 to 120 kilograms for females, and share a streamlined, fat-insulated body suited to cold water.
