Arecales is an order of flowering plants that includes palms and their relatives, known until recent decades under the older name Principes. The order comprises two families, Arecaceae, the palm family, and Dasypogonaceae, added under the APG IV classification of 2016 based on phylogenetic evidence placing it as a sister group to the palms, though that placement remains debated. Arecales contains roughly 206 genera and traces back in the fossil record to about 80 million years ago, in the Late Cretaceous.
