Lophiiformes is the order of ray finned fish containing the anglerfish, named for a modified dorsal fin ray used to lure prey, with its tip called the esca and the whole structure the illicium. Different anglerfish families vary in how they use this lure, reflecting a range of hunting strategies built around the same basic adaptation.
