Macroscelidea is the order of small African mammals known as sengis or elephant shrews, placed in the family Macroscelididae and named for their long, trunk like noses. Once grouped with true shrews on the strength of superficial resemblance, sengis were shown by molecular studies to be more closely related to elephants, leading to their placement in the clade Afrotheria and the adoption of the common name sengi in 1997.
