Mecoptera is an insect order of roughly 600 species in nine families, most commonly called scorpionflies after the family Panorpidae, whose males carry enlarged genitalia held up over the body resembling a scorpion sting. The order also includes the hangingflies of family Bittacidae, known for elaborate mating rituals built around gift-giving, and the snow scorpionflies of family Boreidae, some of which are seen walking across snowfields.
