Methanobacteriales is an order of archaea in the class Methanobacteria, distinguished from other methane-producing microbes by comparatively limited metabolic capabilities. Its members have cell walls composed of pseudomurein and typically appear as Gram-positive, rod-shaped cells. Most species reduce carbon dioxide using formate as an electron donor, while the genus Methanosphaera instead uses hydrogen to reduce methanol to methane.
