Methanococcales is an order of archaea in the class Methanococci, domain Archaea, established by Balch and Wolfe in 1981. Its members are methane-producing archaea with a spherical, coccoid cell shape, and the order contains two families, Methanocaldococcaceae and Methanococcaceae.
