Microbiotheria is a marsupial order represented today by a single living species, the monito del monte of South America, placed in the family Microbiotheriidae alongside the extinct Eocene family Woodburnodontidae. Fossil relatives of the order have also been found in Western Antarctica and northeastern Australia, reflecting the once-connected Gondwanan distribution of its members.
