Osmeriformes is an order of ray-finned fish that includes the true or freshwater smelts and related species such as the noodlefishes, placed within the teleost superorder Protacanthopterygii alongside pike and salmon. The order name, meaning smelt-shaped, derives from the genus Osmerus and ultimately from the Greek word for smell, a reference to the characteristic aroma of smelt flesh.
