Paucituberculata is an order of South American marsupials represented today only by the seven living species of shrew opossums, family Caenolestidae. The order was once far more diverse, with more than 60 extinct species known from the fossil record dating back to the late Paleocene, before a pronounced decline in the middle Miocene left the shrew opossums as its only surviving family.
