Phaethontiformes is a bird order containing one living family, the tropicbirds (Phaethontidae), and an extinct family, Prophaethontidae, from the early Cenozoic. Fossil genera assigned to the order are known as far back as the Paleocene, with the group origins possibly extending into the very end of the Cretaceous.
