Phasmatodea is the order of insects known as stick insects and leaf insects, named from a Greek word for apparition or phantom for their resemblance to plant material. Beyond camouflage, many species have additional defenses such as startle displays, spines or chemical secretions, and the order includes some of the longest insects known, in genera such as Phryganistria, Ctenomorpha and Phobaeticus.
