Poales is a large order of monocotyledonous flowering plants that includes the grasses, bromeliads, rushes and sedges. Botanists recognize 14 families in the order under the APG IV classification, encompassing more than 23,700 species in about 1,017 genera. Its four largest families are Poaceae, the true grasses, with 12,070 species; Cyperaceae, the sedges, with 5,500 species; Bromeliaceae with 3,170 species; and Eriocaulaceae with 1,150 species.
