Rhodobacterales is an order of the Alphaproteobacteria, named from Greek words for rose and rod, describing the pink or red coloration that carotenoid pigments give to cultures of its aerobic phototrophic members. Many species in the order produce gene transfer agents, viruslike particles that package and move DNA between cells and are thought to be an important factor in the evolution of the order.
