Sulfolobales is an order of thermophilic archaea in the class Thermoprotei, formally established by Stetter in 1989 and currently containing one family, Sulfolobaceae. Its best known genus, Sulfolobus, is studied for its distinctive DNA transfer mechanisms and its response to ultraviolet stress, and can be infected by specialized archaeal viruses such as STSV1.
