Thysanoptera is the order of minute, slender insects known as thrips, distinguished by fringed wings and unusual asymmetrical mouthparts; about 7700 species have been described worldwide. Their feathery wings are poorly suited to conventional flight, so thrips instead generate lift with an unsteady clap and fling motion that makes them weak but capable fliers.
