Uropygi is the order of whip scorpions, commonly called vinegaroons for the acetic-acid-smelling spray they release from glands near the abdomen when threatened. Typically 25 to 85 millimeters long, they use their front pair of legs as sensory organs rather than for walking, and hunt insects, millipedes and even scorpions at night. About 100 species in 27 genera are recognized; the alternate name Thelyphonida is used inconsistently across sources, sometimes for this order alone and sometimes for a broader group that also includes the related order Schizomida.
