Aquificae is a phylum of thermophilic bacteria, many living in hot springs and near hydrothermal vents. The phylum is named for the ability of many of its members to produce water as a byproduct of oxidizing hydrogen, and it is considered one of the deepest branching lineages within the bacterial domain.
