Blastocladiomycota is a phylum of fungi separated from the older, broader group Chytridiomycota once genetic studies showed it formed a distinct evolutionary lineage. Members are mostly found in soil and freshwater, where they live as saprotrophs decomposing organic matter or as parasites of algae, other fungi, and small invertebrates. Blastocladiomycota reproduce using flagellated spores and are notable for showing an alternation of generations between distinct haploid and diploid life stages, a feature relatively unusual among fungi.
