Elusimicrobia is a phylum of bacteria first recognized from environmental gene sequences long before any member was successfully grown in culture, a history reflected in the name of the phylum. Elusimicrobia are found in soils, groundwater, and notably in the hindguts of termites and other wood feeding insects, where some members are thought to help break down complex plant material as part of the digestive microbial community of the host.
