Spirochaetes, also classified as the phylum Spirochaetota, is a phylum of distinctively long, helically coiled bacteria that move using internal flagella known as axial filaments rather than external ones. The phylum includes free-living species, symbionts of animals, and pathogens responsible for diseases such as syphilis and Lyme disease.
