Donana

Wetland and Freshwater

Donana National Park covers 543 square kilometers of marshes, shallow streams and shifting sand dunes where the Guadalquivir River meets the Atlantic Ocean in Andalusia, southern Spain, and forms the largest nature reserve in Europe. Established as a reserve in 1969 by the Spanish government and the World Wildlife Fund, it was named a Ramsar wetland in 1982 and a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1994. The park is a critical stopover for migratory birds crossing between Europe and Africa, hosting more than 300 bird species and winter waterfowl populations that reach about 200,000 individuals, alongside mammals such as the endangered Iberian lynx, fallow and red deer, wild boar and Egyptian mongoose.
