Members are small to medium sized birds with compact bodies, short thick necks, and long pointed wings except in the lapwings, along with straight, short bills and reduced hind toes; the family spans from the 14 centimeter, 26 gram collared plover to the 35 centimeter, 368 gram masked lapwing.
