Oncorhynchus

Fish Genera

Oncorhynchus is a genus of ray-finned fish, subfamily Salmoninae, family Salmonidae, order Salmoniformes, native to the coldwater tributaries of the North Pacific basin and comprising sixteen extant species: six species of Pacific salmon and ten species of Pacific trout. All are migratory, either anadromous or potamodromous, mid-level predatory fish that display natal homing, returning to spawn in the waters where they hatched, and semelparity, in which most individuals die after spawning once. The genus name derives from Ancient Greek words for bend and snout, referencing the hooked kype that males develop on the lower jaw during the mating season. Oncorhynchus fish range from the Bering Sea coasts south to Taiwan in the west and Mexico in the east, though they are concentrated in the high-latitude cold waters running from the Russian Far East through the Pacific Northwest of North America.
