Home›Birds›Gulls, Terns And AuksGroupGulls, Terns And AuksThis group gathers Birds subcategory members belonging to the remaining branches of the order Charadriiformes not already placed among this subcategory's shorebirds, the gulls, terns and skuas of the suborder Lari and the auks of the family Alcidae. Gulls are typically larger, often scavenging opportunistic feeders found along coasts and, in several species, well inland; terns are usually smaller and more streamlined, plunge-diving for fish from the air; the skuas are predatory and piratical, often stealing food from other seabirds rather than catching their own; and the auks, the puffins, murres, guillemots, the little auk and the razorbill, are stocky diving seabirds of colder northern waters that use their wings to swim underwater in pursuit of fish, a role filled in the Southern Hemisphere instead by the unrelated penguins. Most members of this group nest in dense colonies on sea cliffs, rocky islands or open beaches, often returning to the exact same nesting site year after year.FactsBrowse BySourcesComments (0)Reader Challenges (0)FactsComparisonTaxonomic Rank OrderWell-attested5 1Reproductive ModeWell-attestedOviparous (Egg-Laying) 2Browse ByAll Gulls, Terns And AuksGulls, Terns And Auks30 entriesGulls, Terns And AuksFilter Results30 entriesCommon GroupAllGulls, Terns And Auks (30)TaxonomyAllAlcidae (3)Charadriiformes (4)Laridae (14)Larus (5)Sterna (4)HabitatAllBog (1)Estuary (6)Freshwater (1)Freshwater Marsh (1)Grassland (1)Intertidal Zone (6)Lake (12)Marine (4)Neritic Zone (8)Open Ocean (6)Riparian Zone (4)River (5)Tundra (3)Wetlands (1)Conservation StatusAllExtinct (1)Least Concern (25)Near Threatened (1)Vulnerable (3)EcosystemAllAntarctic Peninsula (2)Arctic Tundra (1)Caspian Sea (2)Chagos Archipelago (1)Doñana (1)Great Barrier Reef (2)Great Lakes (3)Moorland (1)Okavango Delta (1)Sargasso Sea (1)Svalbard (3)Everyday GroupAllGulls, Terns And Auks (30)DietAllCarnivore (9)Detritivore or Scavenger (3)Insectivore (2)Omnivore (1)Piscivore (15)System (Realm)AllFreshwater (7)Marine (29)Terrestrial (22)Relationship to PeopleAllAgricultural or Structural Pest (2)Ecotourism and Research (1)Hunted or Fished (8)Invasive or Introduced Species (1)Natural Pest Control (1)Living or ExtinctAllYes (29)Where It LivesAllAfrica (14)Antarctica (1)Antigua and Barbuda (1)Argentina (1)Australasia (5)Australia (13)Bahamas (1)Barbados (1)Belgium (19)Belize (1)Brazil (9)Canada (3)Chile (2)Colombia (15)Costa Rica (1)Cuba (1)Denmark (19)Djibouti (5)Dominica (1)Dominican Republic (1)Ecuador (12)El Salvador (1)Eritrea (5)Estonia (1)Europe (1)Finland (1)France (14)Germany (1)Grenada (1)Guatemala (1)Guyana (1)Haiti (1)Honduras (1)Iceland (6)Ireland (11)Jamaica (1)Kenya (6)Luxembourg (1)Madagascar (1)Mauritius (1)Mexico (1)Mozambique (5)Netherlands (1)New Zealand (4)Nicaragua (1)North America (22)Norway (30)Panama (1)Peru (1)Poland (12)Portugal (1)Russia (6)Saint Kitts and Nevis (1)Saint Lucia (1)Saint Vincent and the Grenadines (1)Seychelles (1)South Africa (6)South America (7)South Asia (15)Spain (21)Suriname (1)Sweden (17)Taiwan (4)Tanzania (6)Trinidad and Tobago (1)Ukraine (4)United Kingdom (4)United States (17)Uruguay (7)Venezuela (14)Show ResultsBrowseCompareSelect all 30African skimmerBirds3 linksArctic TernBirds5 linksAtlantic PuffinBirds2 linksBlack TernBirds3 linksBlack-headed gullBirds9 linksBlack-legged kittiwakeBirds4 linksBlack-naped TernBirds3 linksBridled ternBirds3 linksBrown skuaBirds2 linksBrown-headed gullBirds2 linksCaspian ternBirds3 linksCommon gullBirds3 linksCommon murreBirds4 linksCommon ternBirds2 linksEuropean herring gullBirds2 linksGlaucous GullBirds7 linksGreat black-backed gullBirds3 linksGreater Crested TernBirds4 linksGull-billed ternBirds4 linksHerring GullBirds3 linksLeast ternBirds7 linksLesser black-backed gullBirds8 linksLesser crested ternBirds1 linkLittle aukBirds4 linksRazorbillBirds3 linksRiver ternBirds2 linksRoyal ternBirds4 linksSandwich TernBirds3 linksSooty ternBirds2 linksWhite-fronted TernBirds3 linksSources1.
