Solanaceae

Solanaceae, commonly known as the nightshades, is a family of flowering plants in the order Solanales containing approximately 2,700 species of herbs, shrubs, trees, vines, and epiphytes. Many members have a high alkaloid content and are toxic, even as others are widely eaten, and the family originated in South America before spreading to every continent except Antarctica. It includes major food crops such as the tomato, potato, and pepper, as well as tobacco and ornamental genera such as Petunia and Brugmansia.
