African village dogs are a genetically diverse group of indigenous dogs found across Africa, descended from ancient dogs that arrived from the Middle East. Unlike many other dogs kept in Africa, African village dogs were not formally bred, and most remain landraces rather than registered breeds. The Basenji is the only African village dog population that has been formally standardized as a breed.
