Amoeba proteus is a large species of amoeba closely related to the giant amoeba genus Chaos, and is sometimes given the alternative scientific name Chaos diffluens. A single-celled eukaryote that inhabits freshwater environments, it uses extensions called pseudopodia to move and to engulf smaller organisms such as protozoans, algae and rotifers, digesting them in a food vacuole within its cytoplasm.
