The black mongoose is a subspecies of the Angolan slender mongoose occurring in Namibia and Angola. It was originally described as a separate species by Oldfield Thomas in 1928, later considered a subspecies of the slender mongoose, then reclassified as a distinct species after genetic analysis indicated it was distinct, though further evidence suggests it is in fact conspecific with the Angolan slender mongoose.
