The brown hyena is a shaggy-coated scavenger of the deserts, savannas, and coastal areas of southern Africa, including the Namib and Kalahari deserts. It lives in small clans but forages alone over large territories, relying mainly on scavenged carcasses supplemented by fruit, insects, and small prey, and it holds one of the largest home ranges of any social carnivore. It is classified as Near Threatened, with persecution by farmers and habitat loss as the main pressures.
