Coralline algae are red algae in the order Corallinales, characterized by a thallus containing calcareous deposits within its cell walls that give it hardness. Their color is typically some hue of pink or red, though some species appear purple, yellow, blue, white or gray-green. They typically grow in a crustose form in the intertidal zone of rocky shorelines and within coral reefs, appearing as colorful patches on rock surfaces, while unattached specimens can form smooth compact balls or warty, bushy shapes.
