The red algae: a mostly marine phylum of photosynthetic protists whose red pigments allow them to absorb the blue-green light that penetrates deepest into ocean water, letting many species live farther below the surface than most other algae. Rhodophyta includes economically important seaweeds used to produce agar and carrageenan.
