Egyptian Fruit Bat

The Egyptian fruit bat, also called the Egyptian rousette, is a species of megabat found across Africa, the Middle East, the Mediterranean and the Indian subcontinent, the only member of its genus found on continental Africa among the three Rousettus species with an African-Malagasy range. A medium-sized megabat weighing 80 to 170 grams with a wingspan of roughly 60 centimetres, it is highly social and typically lives in colonies of thousands of individuals, and it is one of the few fruit bats to use echolocation, albeit a more primitive form than bats in other families. A frugivore that also acts as a pollinator and seed disperser for many trees and plants, it is considered an agricultural pest where it consumes commercially grown fruit.
