Eurasian teal

The Eurasian teal, Anas crecca, is a small dabbling duck in the family Anatidae, one of the smallest of its kind at 34 to 43 centimeters long, with males in breeding plumage showing a chestnut head with an iridescent dark green patch and a white flank stripe. It breeds across the Palearctic and migrates south in winter, with populations across Europe, Asia, and Africa and important wintering grounds around the Mediterranean, the Persian Gulf, and East Asia. It is a common and widespread duck that forms large flocks outside the breeding season, favoring sheltered freshwater wetlands for breeding and brackish waters in winter, and its name gave rise to the color term teal. It is listed as Least Concern.
