Globigerina is a genus of planktonic foraminifera, single-celled marine organisms that build a perforated shell, found drifting in the ocean's upper waters worldwide. First formally described by French naturalist Alcide d'Orbigny in 1826, the genus has a fossil record stretching back to the Middle Jurassic period, making it one of the longer continuously represented lineages of plankton, and its shells, along with those of related planktonic foraminifera, are a major component of deep-sea sediment used by scientists to study past ocean conditions.
