The Mexican burrowing toad is the sole living species in its own family, Rhinophrynidae, a lineage that diverged from all other frogs and toads early in amphibian evolution. Its body is nearly as wide as it is long, with a small pointed head, no webbing on its front limbs, and a specialized tongue built for slurping up ants and termites underground. It spends most of its life buried in loose soil across Mexico and Central America, surfacing mainly to breed after heavy rains.
