Olinguito

The olinguito is a small, tree-dwelling member of the raccoon family found in the cloud forests of the northern Andes in Colombia and Ecuador. It was formally described as a new species only in 2013, after museum specimens long mistaken for its relative the olingo were re-examined, making it the first new carnivore species identified in the Americas in decades. It is nocturnal and largely frugivorous, feeding on fruit and nectar high in the forest canopy, and its restricted cloud-forest habitat is increasingly fragmented by deforestation.
