Snowshoe hare

The snowshoe hare (Lepus americanus), also called the varying hare, is found across North America and is named for its large hind feet, which keep it from sinking into soft snow much as snowshoes do. It grows a brown coat in summer and a white coat in winter for camouflage, the seasonal change that gives it the varying hare name, and the Canada lynx is its major predator; the cyclical relationship between their populations, recorded through historical fur trade data, has made the pair a well known case study in predator-prey biology. It is assessed as Least Concern.
