The southern river otter, known locally as huillin, is found only in the rivers, lakes, and coastal waters of southern Chile and adjacent Argentina. It is smaller than its northern relative the Neotropical otter and favors slow-moving freshwater as well as sheltered marine coastline, feeding on fish, crustaceans, and mollusks. Hunted heavily for fur through the twentieth century and now further pressured by hydroelectric development and salmon farming, it is classified as Endangered.
