The order comprises about 300 known species, found in marine habitats ranging from shallow tide pools to abyssal depths beyond 6,000 meters. Octopuses are distinguished by eight flexible, sucker-covered limbs arranged around a beaked mouth with bilateral symmetry, a soft body capable of radical deformation to fit through very small openings, and a highly complex nervous system, with more than 500 million neurons, that supports problem-solving and learning abilities often compared to those of mammals. They also employ sophisticated camouflage through color-changing chromatophores and body-texture changes, and move by jet propulsion, expelling water through a siphon.FactsOctopodaConnectionsSourcesComments (0)Reader Challenges (0)FactsClassificationLiving or ExtinctWell-attestedYes 1Taxonomic RankWell-attestedOrder 2OctopodaFilter Results10 entriesCommon GroupAllCephalopods (Octopus, Squid, Nautilus, Cuttlefish) (10)HabitatAllAbyssal Zone (1)Coral Reef (3)Intertidal Zone (2)Neritic Zone (1)Open Ocean (1)Conservation StatusAllLeast Concern (10)EcosystemAllCoral Reef Systems (2)Deep Sea (1)Everyday GroupAllCephalopods (Octopus, Squid, Nautilus, Cuttlefish) (10)DietAllCarnivore (9)System (Realm)AllMarine (10)Relationship to PeopleAllHunted or Fished (5)Kept as Pets (1)Living or ExtinctAllYes (10)Where It LivesAllAngola (1)Argentina (1)Australia (2)Australia (1)Belgium (1)Benin (1)Brazil (2)Chile (1)China (1)Comoros (3)Denmark (1)Eritrea (3)France (2)Indonesia (1)Ireland (1)Israel (1)Japan (2)Kenya (3)Madagascar (3)Mauritius (2)Morocco (1)Mozambique (3)Namibia (1)Netherlands (1)New Zealand (4)Norway (2)Panama (1)Philippines (1)Portugal (3)Seychelles (2)South Africa (3)Spain (2)Tanzania (2)The Indian Ocean (1)The Pacific Ocean (1)Turkey (2)United Kingdom (1)United States (3)Uruguay (1)Show ResultsBrowseCompareSelect all 10Blue-ringed OctopusOctopodaCalifornia Two-spot OctopusOctopodaCoconut OctopusOctopodaCommon OctopusOctopodaDumbo OctopusOctopodaGiant Pacific OctopusOctopodaGlass OctopusOctopodaMimic Octopus (Thaumoctopus mimicus)OctopodaOctopus cyaneaOctopodaPaper NautilusOctopodaConnectionsParent Taxon OfBlue-ringed Octopus, Species Well-attested Source Blue-ringed Octopus (Wikipedia)tier 2California Two-spot Octopus, Species Well-attested Source California Two-spot Octopus (Wikidata)tier 2Coconut Octopus, Species Well-attested Source Amphioctopus marginatus (Wikidata)tier 2Common Octopus, Species Well-attested Source Wikidata: Common Octopustier 2Dumbo Octopus, Species Well-attested Source Wikidata: Dumbo OctopusGiant Pacific Octopus, Species Well-attested Source Wikidata: Giant Pacific OctopusGlass Octopus, Species Well-attested Source Glass Octopus (Wikidata)tier 2Mimic Octopus (Thaumoctopus mimicus), Species Well-attested Source Mimic octopus (Wikidata)tier 2Octopus cyanea, Species Well-attested Source Octopus cyanea (Wikidata)tier 2Paper Nautilus, Species Well-attested Source Wikidata: Paper NautilusSources1.
