The order was established by John Edward Gray in 1849 and comprises two superfamilies, Sepioidea and Vasseurioidea; today it contains only the living family Sepiidae, exemplified by species such as the common cuttlefish Sepia officinalis, alongside several extinct families known from fossils reaching back to the Maastrichtian. Bobtail squids were once classified as a suborder of Sepiida but are now placed in their own separate order, Sepiolida, and the precise evolutionary relationship between the two groups remains an open question in current phylogenetic research.FactsSepiidaConnectionsSourcesComments (0)Reader Challenges (0)FactsClassificationLiving or ExtinctWell-attestedYes 1Taxonomic RankWell-attestedOrder 2SepiidaFilter Results6 entriesCommon GroupAllCephalopods (Octopus, Squid, Nautilus, Cuttlefish) (6)HabitatAllCoral Reef (2)Marine (3)Seagrass Meadow (1)Conservation StatusAllData Deficient (3)Least Concern (2)Near Threatened (1)EcosystemAllCoral Reef Systems (1)Coral Sea (1)Great Barrier Reef (1)Kelp Forests (1)Everyday GroupAllCephalopods (Octopus, Squid, Nautilus, Cuttlefish) (6)DietAllCarnivore (6)System (Realm)AllMarine (6)Relationship to PeopleAllHunted or Fished (4)Kept as Pets (1)Venomous or Dangerous to Humans (1)Living or ExtinctAllYes (5)Where It LivesAllAustralia (1)Australia (1)Belgium (1)Denmark (2)Eritrea (1)Fiji (1)France (1)Greece (1)Israel (1)Italy (1)Kenya (1)Morocco (1)Netherlands (1)Norway (2)Portugal (1)South Africa (1)Spain (1)Sweden (2)Tunisia (1)Turkey (1)United Kingdom (1)Show ResultsBrowseCompareSelect all 6Broadclub Cuttlefish (Sepia latimanus)SepiidaCommon CuttlefishSepiidaCuttlefishSepiidaFlamboyant CuttlefishSepiidaGiant CuttlefishSepiidaPharaoh CuttlefishSepiidaConnectionsParent Taxon OfBroadclub Cuttlefish (Sepia latimanus), Species Well-attested Source GBIF Backbone Taxonomy: Sepia latimanusCommon Cuttlefish, Species Well-attested Source Common Cuttlefish (Wikidata)tier 2Cuttlefish, Species Well-attested Source Wikidata: CuttlefishFlamboyant Cuttlefish, Species Well-attested Source Wikidata: Flamboyant CuttlefishGiant Cuttlefish, Species Well-attested Source Giant Cuttlefish (Wikidata)tier 2Pharaoh Cuttlefish, Species Well-attested Source Pharaoh Cuttlefish (Wikidata)tier 2Sources1.
