Thylacine

The thylacine, also known as the Tasmanian tiger or Tasmanian wolf, was a carnivorous marsupial native to the Australian mainland, Tasmania, and New Guinea. Despite its dog-like appearance it was not a canine but the largest known carnivorous marsupial of modern times. It was hunted to extinction on the Australian mainland in ancient times and survived only in Tasmania into the twentieth century, where the last known individual died in captivity in 1936. It was officially declared extinct by the IUCN in 1982 and by the Tasmanian government in 1986.
