Polypodiopsida is the class of ferns, vascular plants that reproduce by spores rather than seeds or flowers. Their life cycle alternates between a short lived, sexually reproducing gametophyte and the familiar spore bearing fern plant. Many ferns begin growth as tightly coiled fiddleheads that unfurl into fronds.
