Boidae is a family of non venomous snakes commonly called boas, comprising six subfamilies with roughly 14 to 15 genera and 54 to 67 species. They are found chiefly across the Americas and the Caribbean, with additional members in Africa, Europe, Asia, Madagascar, New Guinea and parts of Melanesia. Boas give birth to live young rather than laying eggs, unlike pythons, and most retain a vestigial pelvic girdle visible as small spurs near the tail along with a functional left lung. They kill prey by constriction, coiling around it and tightening their grip until it suffocates, and the family includes the green anaconda, the heaviest known snake species.
