Bromeliaceae

Bromeliaceae, commonly known as the bromeliads, is a family of monocotyledonous flowering plants in the order Poales comprising about 80 genera and 3,700 known species, found primarily in tropical America. The family is distinguished within Poales by its septal nectaries and inferior ovaries, and includes both epiphytic species, such as Spanish moss, and terrestrial species, many of which form water holding tanks from overlapping leaf bases. Its best known member is the pineapple, and its largest species, Puya raimondii, can reach three to four metres in vegetative growth with flower spikes nine to ten metres tall.
