Motacillidae is the bird family uniting the wagtails, pipits and longclaws, all Old World passerines of open country across Africa, Europe and Asia. The wagtails themselves make up the genus Motacilla, with thirteen species, alongside the related genera Anthus (pipits), Macronyx (longclaws), Dendronanthus and Tmetothylacus. Members breed across Africa, Europe and Asia, some of them fully or partially migratory, and are ground-feeding insectivores known for a distinctive tail-wagging habit that gives the wagtails their common name.
