Conepatus

Conepatus, commonly called the hog-nosed skunks, is a genus in the skunk family Mephitidae, order Carnivora, named by Gray in 1837 with the type species Conepatus humboldtii. Native to the Americas, its members are distinguished by white backs and tails contrasted with black underparts, and include some of the largest species in the skunk family. The genus contains four extant species: Molina hog-nosed skunk (Conepatus chinga) of South America, Humboldt hog-nosed skunk (Conepatus humboldtii) of Patagonian southern Argentina, American hog-nosed skunk (Conepatus leuconotus) of Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua, and striped hog-nosed skunk (Conepatus semistriatus) of southern Mexico to northern Peru and eastern Brazil, plus three extinct species.
