Eretmochelys

Eretmochelys is a genus of sea turtles in the family Cheloniidae containing a single living species, the hawksbill sea turtle, distinguished from other sea turtles by its sharp, curving beak with a prominent tomium and the saw-like margins of its shell. It reaches about 1 meter in length and roughly 80 kilograms in weight, with an amber shell patterned in irregular light and dark streaks, and has a global distribution largely limited to tropical and subtropical marine and estuary ecosystems across the Atlantic, Indo-Pacific and Eastern Pacific. The species is critically endangered, chiefly from exploitation of its shell for the tortoiseshell trade.
